Replacement Board vs Accelerators

Post by daschewie » Sun 21 May 2017 19:03

There are several replacement motherboard solutions that can be housed in an Amiga case; Raspberry Pi (Emulation), MIST (FPGA) and Minimig (FPGA) to name a few. However none of these solutions lineup with the holes in the back of the cases, nor do they allow one to hook up the disk drive and joysticks. This is the reason I prefer accelerator cards.

Since the edge connectors are hard to come by for the A1200 board, and the Vampire team is re-implementing most of the Amiga components in FPGA. Why not manufacturer a complete mother board replacement with open KS ROM sockets?

They are making a standalone unit already. It'll probably be released later this year

That is great news. Paired with a new case and keycaps from a1200.net, it would make a fantastic machine.

Hi daschewie,

Errr, yeah.

But "HOW good?"

You didn't see that it will have either 512 megabytes OR 1 gigabyte of RAM?!!! [How much they are putting on it is a closely guarded SECRET!) You will ONLY need your files (data/software) from your old machine. NOTHING ELSE!

Also, it will be FASTER than the accelerators that they are now making. It will rely ZERO on old SLOW hardware. Just imagine having USER chosen 128/384, 256/256 or 384/128 ChipRAM/FastRAM splits! (You can do the 25/50/75% splits on 1 gig yourself.) It is more than 75% faster than the current accelerators, and it will be available in at an unknown time frame, BUT they have a prototype of it RIGHT NOW. They made it about 2 months ago. It is 100mmx120mm. That MIGHT change, it's a prototype. They want to make it available as soon as is possible, maybe even by this Christmas 2017?

It's going to break the dam between people holding out on buying "replacement AMIGAs", for whatever personal "X", "Y" and/or "Z" reasons!!!!

There are over 20 types of these "holdouts" resisting buying into the NEW VAMPIRE PLATFORM that is being established AT THIS VERY MOMENT!

Within a year of today (heck, probably by Dec. 31st, 2017), Vampire will be the MOST USED of ALL AMIGA options out there!!!!!! :-D
