Ethernet with Vampire V500 V2+

Post by _bigdan_ » Sun 5 Feb 2017 10:14

Plipbox is good project but another way to use expansion socket of Vampire V500 V2+ is good old ethernet ?

Anybody think about RTL8211E chip (10/100/1000) or Enc28j60 (10/100). Obviously Wiznet W5100 and Microchip ENC28J60 based module are the cheapiest modules !

Write a news ethernet driver (SANA II) is a great project but it would be awesome : when a 68k driver works fine, crucial parts could then be optimised with SIMD extensions.

I could help if someone works on such driver project.

AS old sysadmin, i have few network skills but i am a poor coder, my C is rusted ;)

I noticed there is a network driver in the SAGA 0.11 archive (SDnet.device). I believe this driver is for an Arduino style piece of hardware. Does this add on exist for the Vampire 500 v2+ ? To me it would make sense if a driver was released then the hardware should be available for it. But then again, things do not necessarily work out that way in the Amiga Universe.

Sorry, i hav'nt yet a Vampire card so i am just waiting and put money aside ;)

All correct wifi or ethernet driver would be fine ! There's lot of work to do on tcp/ip stack side too (Roadshow i presume).

Strange things do happen. I wonder what that sdnet.device actually means. Who in a sane state of mind would use an SD slot for networking?

Seriously, the 10 MBit/s Ethernet adapter works over the SPI of the Vampire SD slot right now. The driver is operational and several people of the team have built their own adapter cable. The next Apollo Core Release will include the ROM part of the software stack I make use of (vampire.resource).

Hey Bax very cool! Nice work. Love the humour. :)

What sort of raw throughput is this capable of? I presume the SPI interface is the limiting factor? Does that scale with Vampire system clock speed?

Cheers!

The SPI clock rate of the Vampire could be in theory on par with the other output pins (like HDMI). But the limiting factor in this case is the max. clock of the module. In my experiments, the ENC28J60 could take a little more than the spec. limit of 20 MHz.

Thanks for the info. Would an expected throughput of around 8 Mbit/s be reasonable? Its big brother (424J600) is rated at 14Mbit/s through SPI but that is a 10/100 chip.

Have a great day.

Hi, we are in the early stage of this project, it is to early to say what speed we can achieve at the end. Currently we are runing at 400 KB/s, but the speed can be inproved. It's work well and it's reliable. Bax have done a fantastic work on this, but it's only the begining.

Are you the bigdan from France that I know or is this a coincidence ?
